Free Psychotherapy and How to Find Out What You’re Really Thinking
Let’s start this out by declaring that no one knows you better than you. And at the same time, if you’re anything like me, it can (quite often) be tough to discern what you really want or what is really going on with you under the surface.
The best way I’ve found to get raw and unfiltered access to myself is through my dreams. This might sound bizarre or weird to you, but we all dream every night multiple times. It’s really not that weird.
A few years ago a teacher of mine asked me to start paying attention to my dreams at night and then begin recording them in a journal. At first I had difficulty even remembering my dreams by the time morning rolled around. I would have no content to approach my teacher with in the morning (not so sweet). This dilemma led to me waking up in the middle of the night after I’d had a dream to immediately record it under candlelight. Thankfully, over time it got easier to remember.
As I started this practice I began creating a relationship to my own unconscious. By unconscious I mean the reservoir of feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories that are outside of our awareness in day-to-day life. It’s something intangible that’s there inside of us, but we don’t necessarily know it or interact with it. So, as you can imagine, when you start paying attention to this piece of you an immense power becomes available. I’d venture to say it’s close to a superpower.
You get to see yourself and your current state of being in a light that has not yet been polluted by marketing ads, egotistical thoughts, conscious fears, lies, made up stories, other peoples’ opinions, etc, etc. The list could go on and on. The dream is a very clear picture or story that’s there for you to use as a tool.
A tool for what? In the broadest sense, dreams help us become more awakened and aware of ourselves. On the more practical and tangible level they can help us make clear choices at home or at work. These choices tend to be more in alignment with our bigger vision and therefore support us in getting to what we really want quicker than someone who is out of touch with themselves. Dreams simply empower us to create our own realities.
At this point you’re probably wondering what to do with your dreams in order to get to this place of empowerment. So now I’m going to pass the same homework along that my teacher gave me – hire yourself as a psychotherapist and start remembering your dreams and writing them down. (helpful hint: set an intention before you fall asleep to remember your dreams) I actually like to call it dream yoga because it takes practice.
It’s awesome you’re curious enough about yourself and your dreams to read this post. Openness makes all the difference in this world.
Sweet dreams tonight!
