The Power of Creating Your Day
What would your life look like if you changed the way you relate to time?
You’ll probably enjoy this article if you identify with any of the following:
In my own life, however, there’s a part of me that hadn’t kept up. I noticed I was still attempting to manage my time in the same way I was 10 years ago – by filling out a planner with action items like “go to the bank”, “buy dog and cat food”, “go to yoga class” and setting goals like “meditate for 10 minutes every morning”, “photograph food 2 or more times each week”, and “renew health insurance”.
In all honesty, I’m a person that loves to make these lists and check things off when they’re done. It seemed like a sure path to fulfillment. But, after a closer look I found that sometimes there would be a huge part of me left unfulfilled when every single item had been checked off the list.
Here’s my “ah hah” that came out of this conversation that I want to share with you; to have a true sense of fulfillment show up, organize your day around who you want to be instead of what you have to do.
It sounds simple, but it’s a complete shift in perspective on composing your day – moment by moment. You’ll see there is both room and time for you live into who you’re practicing to be and what you choose to do. This way of checking in is much more effective than to-do lists. Individuals and companies alike can practice this in an effort to be on a straighter path to fulfillment.
If you’re interested and inspired, read on about what I’ve come up with to measure who I want to be instead of what I have to do. I explain how to simply take your to-do list and transform it into a tool that brings out the best in you, unveil what qualities I’ve chosen to measure my day’s fruition and offer a visual of what my new day-planner looks like (with help from the folks at Café Gratitude).

Transform that darn to-do list
- Make columns with each quality listed in one section.
- Make two rows on the left side. One for "AM" and one for "PM". You could get more detailed and break it down into hours.
- Now, simply take your to-do list that you already have written out (I know you have one somewhere) and choose what quality you are practicing while accomplishing that task. Write it under that colomn and in line with am or pm. Refer to the top of this post to see the photo I took of my planner. This will give you a clear idea of what to create.
